Timex Ironman T5C411 Unisex 30-Lap Digital Fitness Heart Rate Monitor Watch Review

This is my first heart rate monitor and after a lot of searching, I selected this one. I am not a Tri-athlete Olympian, just an average guy who runs about 3 times a week. So I wanted something an average person would actually use. I wanted to improve my running ability and heard a HR monitor was the way to go. I checked out other brands such as Nike and Polaris, but they all seemed too complicated and bulky. That being said, I was looking for a basic, easy to use (Not complex), inexpensive, and sturdy HR monitor. Well the Timex 5C411 fit all of my criteria. This HR monitor is very easy to use and aesthetically pleasing as well. The basic functions can be learned very quickly (Especially for anyone who's owned a Timex Ironman watch). I got them down after one use. Can't beat the price and Timex is known for "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking."There is only one thing I wish was a little different. When using the chronograph, the HR appears in small numbers above the counting time which makes it just a hair difficult to see when you want to view your lap time and your HR. However, if you cycle through the menus back to the main time screen, your HR takes the place of the normal time and appears in large, easy to see numerals (just a minor observation). So far it works great and I am very pleased with the purchase.

Timex Ironman T5J985 Unisex Trail Runner Bodylink Heart Rate Monitor Watch Review

Timex Ironman T5J985 Unisex Trail Runner Bodylink Heart Rate Monitor Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used Timex Ironman watches for the last 20+ years for tracking running splits while training for local 10k races, so I am used to the format. The format for the Trail Runner watch is total different due to its additional features of the GPS and Heart Rate monitor. Even with these new features, it is still easy to use.
It has the ability to show you 3 different lines of realtime date that you can select from while in the Chonograph mode. You can watch heart rate, speed, distance, pace, lap time, split time, etc. what ever you desire. The middle line of the screen is larger than the top or bottom data line, so you can even toggle what data is provided in that line for better viewability while running. It comes with a bike attachment for Triathalon training so you can mount to handle bars instead of looking down at your wrist all the time.
The GPS is very accurate for tracking distance even under heavy trees. If you are using the belt clip versus the arm band for the GPS module, then you may find that accuracy may vary slightly due to being covered up by your shirt while running. When I tuck in my shirt just above the belt clip on my hip, then the GPS is precisely accurate each and every time. I have not used the arm band yet, but I imagine that would solve this problem. You can hit the mode button a couple of times while running to get to the Finish mode, and the watch will predict your finish time based on how far you told the watch you run will be -- extremely helpful for hitting target times while training, trying to hit a qualifying time for a road race, or hitting a personal best or finish time for a race.
The GPS module takes about 1 to 2 minutes to link up with the satellites, so you need to give it that time before you begin your run. The heart rate monitor is awesome and 100% accurate - I tested it for accuracy against another HR monitor. I also checked the speed mode on the GPS (shows MPH) against 3 cars to see how accurate, and again 100% accurate even at 50 and 60 MPH. Weight wise, the GPS module is so light even with the 1 AA battery, that you dont even notice its there. The watch itself is not any larger than some of my other large Timex Ironman watches and is also extremely light weight. I also ordered the new version of the Data Recorder (weighs as much as a ping pong ball), but I have not used it yet in the three weeks I've owned the Watch kit and Data Recorder. The info that comes with the Data Recorder shows that they have not updated the software program for you computer to be compatible with Windows Vista. I checked online at Timex.com, and they didn't show an update to the software yet to download the week that I received the Data Recorder, but it looks like a great addition to the package that I should and will start using shortly.
All in all, I'm extremely pleased with this watch and how it is helping me to improve my running. I love being able to go out the door and just run until the watch tells me I've hit my half way point on distance so that I can turn around and head home. If you can afford this watch, you will not be sorry at all!!

I have now had this watch for 6 months and it is really fantastic. The heart rate monitor works very well and it is very comfortable to wear. I debated if I wanted to get a heart rate monitor watch with a chest strap and I am really glad that I did. It is very accurate and so easy to use. Also, I have a very small wrist and it is very comfortable. Lastly - I did a lot of research and found you can change the battery on the chest strap yourself, I haven't had to yet, but am glad I have that option.

Timex Ironman Midsize Race Trainer Heart Rate Monitor with Data Xchanger Watch, Black/Grey, Mid Size Review

Timex Ironman Midsize Race Trainer Heart Rate Monitor with Data Xchanger Watch, Black/Grey, Mid Size
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been using a Timex for several years, and was very happy with it until it started malfunctioning. I went looking for a new one, comparing Polar, Suunto, and then later Timex. My two primary concerns were quality, a diffuse set of factors, and the ability to work with an Apple running Mac OS X. Only some of Polar's and Suunto's watches work with a Mac, and then only with external software. I was surprised when I found Timex's Ironman Trainer packages also worked with Apple.
Provisos:
- A sleek light watch, that fits my wrists - I have proportionately slender wrists, although I'm fairly large - but might be unusable on men with large wrists.
- Data management is done on a website, requiring registrationPros:
- Looks great
- Easy to use, although it has many features
- Reliable (assumed from my long-term experience with other Timex watches)
- Inexpensive (the cost was $50 less than advertised elsewhere, and much less than comparable Polar/Suunto watches)
- User-exchangeable battery (some Polar/Suunto models require shipping for battery replacement)
- Works nicely with PC's and Mac with a free account with Training Peaks, an effortless installation and upload to the third-party site.
Cons:
- There are some desktop packages, they are a bit pricey for my needs, $130 per year, a recreational fitness buff. The basic online statistics are good, but I would love to be able to slice-and-dice my performance numbers in more detail.

Timex Ironman T5F011 Men's Bodylink Heart Rate Monitor Watch Review

Timex Ironman T5F011 Men's Bodylink Heart Rate Monitor Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the Timex Body Link for 3 year and absolutely love it! Using the heart rate monitor & GPS is very simple, all you have to do is turn them on push the red display button and they start working. There are also a number of different display settings for enthusiasts to customize.
The watch comes with a heart rate monitor (chest strap) and a GPS piece. The GPS comes with a arm band and belt clip accessories. This is not a watch with GPS built in like Garmin watches.
Timex also sells a data recorder that works with the Body Link system, but I would not buy it again since the software that comes with it is pretty worthless. Besides, most of the information you would want to track can be stored in the watch and written down later.
Pros:
- Easy to get started with
- 100 lap memory
- Loads of different display modes
- Reasonably small compared to other GPS watches
- Great price
- Heart rate recovery timer
Cons:
- GPS needs a lot of "open" sky to work properly, if you plan on running on forest trails or in the city with a lot of high rise buildings the GPS can't lock on to enough satellites.

I am a walker, not a runner, but I wanted a heart rate monitor to help make sure I'm walking fast enough to get an aerobic workout. It's hard to tell if you're walking fast enough without one. I also wanted it as a motivation tool. I'm very happy with it and it meets all my needs. I use it every day and am very happy I bought it!
It keeps track of multiple items in your workout session: length of time, your average heart rate, your lowest and highest heart rates, calorie counter.
I read through some of the other reviews people have posted and I don't know why they are having trouble getting readings. Maybe they have a faulty unit and should send it back. The chest strap is snug but not uncomfortable at all. I slightly dampen the two sensors as the manual suggests before I put it against my skin. Everything works like a charm. I find the fastening system very easy to use. It's not much different than a bra strap although it's even easier since the clasps are just left or right of center -- you can choose which one you want to use. The hard sensor piece is in the very front and only about 6 inches long or so. The strap is stretchy elastic and can be washed, which is a nice feature since you put it against your skin each time.
I did quite a bit of research before I decided to buy this HRM unit. There were a lot of choices out there. Some very expensive. I think most people would be happy with this unit. It's nice and sturdy -- from a brand you can trust (Timex). The watch is a little chunky for a woman to wear when not working out, but I think it's just fine for a workout setting. Most of the HRM watches are a little chunky because of all the electronics contained in that little watch. If you go to [...], you can see "women's" versions of this same watch that appear to be a little thinner and in more feminine colors. Amazon has sellers that carry these versions on occasion. You might want to do a search if you're wanting a watch you can wear all day.
Please note that this HRM unit is just the watch and the strap. I was confused when researching watches because some of them come with a speed and distance GPS unit that you wear on your arm. And those units cost a LOT more. At least $100 and often up to $300. You only need the GPS piece if you are interested in finding out things like: your pace, your average pace, your best pace. It measures your real-time speed and tracks your total distance. I'm not at the workout level that I need this information. I'm fine with knowing my time and making sure I'm keeping my heartrate in the target zone that will help me lose weight. You don't need the GPS version unless you are interested in the additional data features I just mentioned.
One other thing, the watch automatically comes set to beep if you are not within your heart rate zone. But you can turn off the beep and just monitor your heart rate visually on the watch. I found the beeping very annoying. During warm up and cool down you are not going to be in your target zone so of course it will beep. I couldn't find that there was a way you could temporarily silence the sound. I think you only have options of on or off. I just leave the beeping turned off and I'm very happy. I don't see that it's very useful, but maybe some people like it.
So, overall, I think it's a great product and I'm very happy with my purchase. Good luck with your decision making!

The watch has "Triathlon" below the Ironman label, and the manual states it is a triathlon training tool. However, this monitor will not work while swimming. It is an excellent tool for cycling and running, and the review mode is very helpful in recording workout information. I called Timex when the heart rate monitor failed to function in the pool after re-reading the manual to see if the problem could be pilot error. Instead, Timex warranty personnel told me the watch did not work while swimming and was not intended to and there was nothing they could do about the problem. (Not very courteous in providing that information as well.) He also added none of the monitors will work in water. This is incorrect as Polar monitors work quite well while swimming. At the advertised price on Amazon, this is a very good value, and if you don't need it for swimming, it is very good. I bought the monitor specifically for cycling and swimming, and I still considered keeping it because the other features of the watch are excellent.

Having used numerous HRM watches in the past, this is the best I've used thus far. It has everything you need, from automatic zone calculation to custom zones, to intervals, to lap timers, and it's GPS 3D compatible and shows your speed, distance, altitude, and even predicts your finish time.
I've had no problems with it at all. The signal is clear. As long as you keep the watch within 3 feet of the chest monitor, you won't have any problems.
I think the best feature of the Timex HRM watches though is that both the watch and chest monitor batteries are user-replaceable. It doesn't get any better than that.
If you're serious about getting into shape and like to track your progress over many activities in the day, I'd also recommend getting the Timex Bodylink Data Recorder II. Once you activate the watch and the chest monitor, the Recorder will also start recording signals from the chest monitor (and GPS too if you have). For martial arts practice, I'll activate the chest monitor via my watch, then take my watch off (can't use it during practice) and then activate the Recorder so that I can get accurate readings after my training.
Perhaps the only thing lacking might be a calorie counter, but I've found most calorie counters on HRM watches to be inaccurate.
Highly recommended watch!

It's no longer enough to train hard; you also have to train smart if you want an edge. Enter the Timex Ironman Race Trainer digital heart rate monitor watch, which gives elite athletes the performance tools they need to succeed. The Race Trainer's primary function is to monitor your average heart rate and tell you whether to boost your intensity or take it slower. However, the watch also offers several more sophisticated tools, including a 10-workout memory, a 50-lap chronograph that calculates your average heart rate per lap, and five interval timers with individual heart rate target zones. The tools combine to make serious training seriously easy. And thanks to the Race Trainer's wireless Data Xchanger USB, you can customize your HRM and watch settings, upload workouts directly to your PC, or use training and nutrition software powered by TrainingPeaks.

Watch is the same as you would expect from a Timex Ironman. The watch is very comfortable. It looks like a regular sports watch. It appears to be well made. I am sure that it will only last about 2 years but that is alright for the money. Usually the timex ironmans tend to get beat up looking before they actually die. The interface is very intuitive. It works like a standard Ironman. You can display the heart rate in many different ways. I like that the time is visible while the heart rate monitor is functioning. I also like that you can display the heart rate in a bunch of different ways. I don't really use all of the fancy features. I did use it once just to see how it worked- it worked fine. (Avg hr, peak hr, blah blah). All that I do is keep my heart rate between 140-160. I would not count on the calorie counter to work. The recovery heart rate is a handy feature that is really easy to use. I think that measuring recovery heart rate is one of the best measures of heart health.
I bought this watch to replace an Omron that I bought off of Amazon for $32. The Omron was alright, but it was telling my that my heart rate was 220 plus beats a minute once in a while. And I wanted to see if I was going to have a cardiac arrest. The timex is coded, so I don't get any interference from the equipment or other heart monitors. The timex road trainer is superior in every way to the omron.
The only real downside is that the chest strap is a little short for big guys. I am 6'2" 240 lbs with a wide chest (48") and it is a little snug on me. I am hoping that it stretches out after a little while. This is a small annoyance that I don't mind dealing with for how well this watch works. Most people won't need to worry about that. I would say that only if you are bigger than me that it would be a real problem. It is nice to leave the watch on all day and then just throw the strap on when I go to the gym. During the day, the watch reminds me to hit the gym after work!
The heart rate is very accurate and reliable on this watch. It works consistently with no problems what so ever. This is definately worth the extra money. Using a heart rate montitor is a must to get the most out of cardio workouts. I will always use one from now on.
I had a polar a few years ago, and that thing was no where near as user friendly as this watch. This thing beats my old polar in every way. Also- I wouldn't be caught dead wearing the polar outside of the gym!

I read all the previous reviews of this particular watch thoroughly before making my decision. I am an active training triathlete and needed the functions provided by this watch for all three sports. Everything worked flawlessly for about 3 weeks and then the crystal started to fog up....I waited for a few days and then it got worse and then ultimately failed. I was not quite sure how to proceed. Do I engage Timex or Amazon? Well, the Timex website was not very return-friendly and so I came back to the Amazon website. OMG....this was so easy...I initiated the request for replacement product and had the new watch within about 4 days and then Amazon provides really easy return shipping labels so it did not cost me anything. Once I got the replacement watch, I used the same packaging for the faulty watch and dropped in the box. No fuss, no mess.
So, my 5-star rating is for both the watch and mostly Amazon.
